چکیده

The examination of cultures of stools is mostly used in establishing the diagnosis of bacillary dysentery. Agglutination, the most frequently used serological investigation, does not give reliable results and is therefore not generally used. The bacteriological examination of stools fails in a certain percentage of cases, irrespective of the mode of culture used. Particularly troublesome are examinations of stools in patients treated with antibiotics, for then the stools are usually negative. Patients with negative culture results are admitted to hospital and discharged with a vague diagnosis of gastro-enteritis or entero-colitis. This fact, however, can be very important epidemiologically, especially in children living in collective groups or persons employed in handling food. Recent work, especially that of Neter and Walker (1954), Neter, Westphal, Luderitz, and Gorzynski (1956a), and Neter, Gorzynski, Gino, Westphal, and Luderitz (1956b), demonstrated the value of the haemagglutination technique in the diagnosis of enteric infections, so it was decided to use this method in the investigation of bacillary dysentery.

Bacteremia due to Shigella flexneri in an adult

Shigella species were discovered over 100 years ago by a Japanese microbiologist named Shiga, for whom the genus is named. Shigella organisms are a group of gram-negative, facultative intracellular pathogens. They were recognized as the etiologic agents of bacillary dysentery or shigellosis in the 1890s. These organisms are members of the family Enterobacteriaceae and tribe Escherichieae; they ...

Diagnostic value of indirect hemagglutination in the seroepidemiology of Shigella infections.

To evaluate the usefulness of the indirect hemagglutination (IHA) test in the epidemiological investigation of shigellosis, single serum specimens were tested from 50 patients with Shigella dysenteriae 1 (Shiga bacillus) infections, 103 asymptomatic contacts of these cases, 267 adult and 100 student control, and serum specimens collected during two outbreaks caused by S. sonnei and one outbreak...

Pathogenesis of shigellosis: from molecular and cellular biology of epithelial cell invasion to tissue inflammation and vaccine development.

INTRODUCTION Shigellosis, or bacillary dysentery, is a bloody diarrhea caused by the invasion of the human colonic and rectal mucosa by Shigella, a gramnegative microorganism belonging to the family enterobacteriaceae. In the developing world, children are the major victims with 600,000 deaths every year. The symptoms are characterized by early watery diarrhea rapidly followed by fever, intesti...

Multi-locus sequence type analysis of Shigellas pp. isolates from Tehran, Iran

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Strains of Shigella spp. can cause shigellosis, or bacillary dysentery. that is a public health problem worldwide. The aim of this study was to describe the population structure and genetic relatedness of multidrug resistant S. sonnei and S. flexneri isolated during a one year period from children with diarrhea in Tehran, Iran. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 70 Shi...

Epidemiological characterization of resistance and PCR typing of Shigella flexneri and Shigella sonnei strains isolated from bacillary dysentery cases in Southeast Brazil

Shigella spp are Gram-negative, anaerobic facultative, non-motile, and non-sporulated bacilli of the Enterobacteriaceae family responsible for “Shigellosis” or bacillary dysentery, an important cause of worldwide morbidity and mortality. However, despite this, there are very few epidemiological studies about this bacterium in Brazil. We studied the antibiotic resistance profiles and the clonal ...
